The 22-year-old woman who fought back against a subway perv man who pulled up her skirt and groped broke down in tears when she spotted him in a police line-up.
"I knew it was him right away," Shyane Dejesus, a senior at City College, said Monday. "It is a face I couldn't forget. … I was overwhelmed. I started crying."
The man she identified, Froylan Andrade, 39, was awaiting arraignment Monday night on sex abuse charges — a day after cops arrested him at his Elmhurst, Queens, home.
A self-described "tough cookie," Dejesus was waiting on the 6 platform at Union Square at about 9:30 a.m. Oct. 23 when the suspect lifted her dress and groped her private area, cops said.
Dejesus, an anthropology major from Astoria, said she was on the downtown platform yelling "this man groped me" but that nobody came to her aid.
"I was hysterical, my hands were shaking, I was overwhelmed," Dejesus said. "They looked at this man and then at me then turned their heads."Dejesus said her instincts kicked in and she began fighting against her attacker.
"I punched him with my left hand even though I'm right-handed," Dejesus said. "I didn't want him to get away with it."
He fled onto the train and took a seat. Dejesus followed and kicked him in the face, snapping his photo with her cell phone camera, she said.
All the while, he didn't say a word, Dejesus said.
"The minute you fight back, they're cowards," she said.
Cops said they were able to arrest Andrade because of a tipster who recognized him from the photo Dejesus snapped.
Andrade was arrested Sunday after his brother gave cops his address.Both brothers work at Spring Natural, a restaurant on Spring St. Police went there after getting the tip.
"I was raised to fight back," Dejesus said. "I felt disgusting. I'm nice but I'm a tough cookie.
"Dejesus, who got off the subway at Astor Place, urged other women to fight back too."Don't let them scare you," she said. "They're cowards."

Tips on Getting Gaming Industry/Art Jobs

How did you get your job at flowplay? I want to get into the gaming industry. Also, what do you do most of your time during your job?

I applied!!! Interpunkt got a job there first and we'd worked together for a publisher previously so she suggested I come in for an interview. She got her job there just by applying too, they'd put out a classified ad on craigslist. Of course, we both had the art skills required to back it up. But I think the thing that blew them away the most was our speed. We produced about 1000% faster (I'm NOT exaggerating) than the two artists they had working there already.
But I think the biggest factor is that I applied. Most artists NEVER apply for a job. Ever. Art jobs won't just fall into your lap, you have to go get them! It's just like any other job, like if you wanted to be a waiter, how would you get that job? You'd apply!
For entry level art jobs, the talent bar isn't always that high because at first you'll probably doing monkey work like pre production work (something like converting/cropping files, putting them in order, putting them into templates, exporting, for example). But you'd be surprised at how quickly your art skills will improve when you're feverishly working all day! During that time you get to learn their file structures, learn about the programs and skills involved, etc. Many people from low level jobs get converted into higher level jobs because one of the really time consuming/expensive/etc parts of a job is making sure the person you hire can start work as soon as possible. Even though I work for this game, for example, doesn't mean I could start immediately at another company, it'd probably take a few days for me to get the hang of how they do stuff over there, and that's me coming from an experienced position! Also, they're more likely to hire you if you can show that you're fast, timely, willing to correct your mistakes, easy to work with, etc!!! These are crucial! No one wants to promote a person that's a big jerk and a slacker!! One of my favorite people at work is this girl we have that will work on any part of the process with a smile on her face! She never tried to shove into the design stage at all (I hate that =__=), but her amazing work as an intern made us happy to have her work on design things! And she's VERY talented! Like I think she's a way better outfit makey person than me! And she's FAST! So she definitely has a future in the industry!
A lot of artists will either 1) not apply or 2) turn up their noses at what they see as monkey work. If you really want to work in the gaming industry, apply! Apply!!!
I know a lot of artists are really self conscious about their work but you have to shut your eyes and apply! I'm still really puke-filled about my own art!! That part of you will probably never leave! I know a guy with gallery showing in Milan and a lucrative career and he STILL feels all self conscious and mopey about his art! That will never end! So you can either be self-conscious about your art or be self-conscious with a job! A way that can help you is to have a friend that encourages you. Really, I find the best method is to have a person sit by me and help me fill out an application and then make sure I send it in.
As for what I do: I'm usually either

1) doing monkey work still! That never ended for me! About half my time is that, really!
2) doing an illustration
3) editing stuff
4) designing and then making little animals and animating them <— lately I'm doing mostly this + monkey editing
5) designing an outfit

There are several stages of the production and design process, and I can do all of them because for a long time it was just me and interpunkt working on the art. But there are a few things only I can do (like the animal thing is pretty much all me). Not because of the ART skill involved but it's the TECHNOLOGY skill. Like I know how to make the little animal do so that it'll work with the game's code properly. And that's something I could have only learned on the job.

some bad photos of commissions i did for jet city. the one with three ladies is supposed to be poison ivy, harley and catwoman. the guy was like “can you draw all three of them together” and i was like “sure” and he was like “and make them all sexy like some of these *gesture at prints on table*”. And then I wept a lot because I don’t think the prints are very sexy at all ;___;! they’re just cuddling! cuddles!

then I was stuck going “god, what do sexy ladies do? hand holding and hugging, right? :/”

Apparently, now I'm addicted to complaining about products that make me sad.

To Whom it May Concern,

Your fat free tortillas stick together. I don't know if this is just the fat free ones or a fluke or what. I didn't have this problem with the regular (not fat free) ones but again, I don't know if that means anything.

What I purchased was a solid block of tortilla. Prying them apart was useless, the centers cemented together to form an indistinguishable core of tortilla-ness. I tried heating the tortilla pile, to get them to come apart, but it was useless, only making it worse. In the end I pulled off the outside parts and then used bits of other parts to cover the hole in the center. It was a sad patchwork held together with cheese and beans that, once heated further, caused a break in the tortilla structure that melted through and attached my lunch to the plate.

This was a catastrophic day for burritos. A burritastrophe, if you will. I ate it anyways, but there were tears in my eyes and not with the usual grace one associates with burrito consumption.

Just thought I'd let you know.

So I emailed them like "the new shit you sent me is wrong." This was a long back and forth with so I'm abbreviating a lot here but with some choice quotes:

First, I was talking to someone named "ann" then I was switched to "donald". Donald thought my name was "Andria", because Donald doesn't give a shit.

"Please remember the guidelines are just that guidelines and should not come into play in the final art."

Wait. What?!! No. The whole purpose of having ruled paper is that you don't have to worry about measuring for thirds/half panels. so already, i know I'm in trouble, this guy doesn't think where the third markers are is an important thing.

"It is impossible to tell the exact dimensions from your scan."

What!!!

"May I ask, do you resize your artwork for scanning and printing? We consulted with Marvel and DC artists along with the Center for Cartoon Studies when we laid the sheets out. Most of them do not use blue lined sheets except in commercial work. They resize their personal work so they prefer to use unlined sheets and will resize at their computer."

Marvel and DC artists use ruled paper. They...yes they do, what the fuck are you talking about. in fact, DC and Marvel MAKE THEIR OWN RULED PAPER WITH THEIR LOGO ON IT.

WHAT. It's a scan so yes, it's SHRUNKEN DOWN but I don't like... randomly transform half the page so that it's all fucked up. Furthermore, I'm just scanning it to SHOW HIM what I am seeing when I take a ruler to the page! I'm not just looking at a scan on a computer screen! He also sent me .pdf showing what their layout is for the page, and is all "well the layout is correct and the scan you sent matched the layout" (what he means by 'match' is that the logo is at the top, they had an older run of paper that had the logo at the bottom and was wrong). WHAT. I don't give a shit if your layout ON THE COMPUTER is correct, I want the physical paper to be correct!! THE PAPER, BITCH!

Ok, so at this point I realized I was speaking to someone that really doesn't know what they're talking about and can't even form words enough to talk to me about this sensibly. And he's like "we'll send you some unlined paper so you can rule it however you want" like, fuck you buddy! I bought this so I wouldn't have to figure out where the half and thirds marks are! YOU MADE THE PRODUCT! Don't tell me that a product YOU MADE has no real point, are you insane?! So then I sent him a giant email going "I do not want anymore paper from you, DO NOT send me any more paper" and links to REAL comic pages with the logos at the top, etc. Hopefully he doesn't even reply back to me because I'm blown away at how fucking stupid this is.

Moral of the story: do not buy Strathmore ruled pages. Ever. They are too lazy to USE A RULER and physically check the paper coming out of their printers.

Last time, on Strathmocalypse Showdown:

Oh my God.

Ok, hi. You might have noticed that me and interpunkt are doing a comic.

What you might not know is that our comics are drawn on paper. Comic book paper.

S.T.O.P. was drawn on Canson's pre lined comic book paper (this brand, that makes me angry because it's called "fanboy" and has the worst art ever on its packaging blahblah) . For Minor Acts of Heroism, for reasons I won't go into because they're fucking boring, we switched to Strathmore (the 200 series). You're probably going "yeah, Strathmore, I've heard of them, they make good paper, and that's what Blue Line Pro is, isn't it?" Yes, exactly, person I'm pretending I'm talking to. Exactly. If there's a trusted name in paper, it's probably Strathmore.

When you get comic book boards, they're usually lined (unless you're a person that lines your own stuff). That means they're printed with guides that help you divide the paper in half and thirds, etc, shows you where the bleed area is, blahblah.

So last month I got a pack of paper from the art store and brought it home and used it blahblah and interpunk is like "hey...this paper is super different from my pack..." and it turned out that the paper's markers were extremely way off. How off, you ask?

So I sent Strathmore an email going "dudes, your shit is all wrong" and they were like "whoa, we're sorry" and sent me a new pack.

The new pack is also wrong. Wrong in a different way than the example above. I only realized in the middle of doing a page that utilized the "third" markers very heavily.

I am not a genius of math, I'm actually a moron of math. But that's cool. It's not my job to divide measurements and use a lot of rulers (although sometimes I have to and it hurts me). But at Strathmore, it's literally someone's job to divide the paper CORRECTLY. That is someone's job. Strathmore probably had a god damn team on it. Actually, they DID have a team on it.

When I sent them an email and the sent me another pack? part of what they replied with was:

"We discovered this issue earlier this year and found that the issue went back to an early printing. Based upon our digging into the issue of the markings we made adjustments to the layout based upon input from several comic artists."

What. WHAT. You had a BUNCH of people, including input from comic artists on this paper and it's still wrong? Strathmore, you make paper. Part of making that paper is utilizing what is called a "ruler". I assume you have AT LEAST one ruler in your possession. Perhaps you ONLY have one and someone was using that ONE Strathmore ruler to prop up an end table? I don't know!

What's MORE crazy?? BLUE LINE PRO USES STRATHMORE'S PAPER. JUST... fucking... TRACE THE BLUE LINE PRO GUIDES. YOU KNOW A COMPANY THAT DOES THIS AND HAS RULED VERSIONS OF YOUR PAPER!!! Someone YOU KNOW already did the impossible math work for you!!

I...I'm going to drink this beer now, and try to figure out how to deal with the next page, but I thought I should warn you guys. This paper is super cheap (compared to bluelinepro) so I know a lot of you might use it so I thought I'd give you a heads up.

Now, you might be thinking "something looks strange here", that's because some of the characters don't have clothing!!

kristen draws the clothes on people since I kind of suck balls at clothing (I had to draw sergio and julius' stuff because I hadn't exactly figured out wtf they were going to wear yet).

sometimes last second revisions happen and we (especially me) don't have a clear handle on the clothes until it's game time!

This is kristen's scan so you can see where she added in clothing already and where she carefully marked out where the black should be. i've been watching cake boss lately. it's a really cute show, i'm always impressed by how he makes these technically very complicated looking sculptures. and unlike horrible ace of cakes he actually makes edible cakes.

ok so this took me like a million years to do. REALLY REALLY HARD. it's full of things that i'm not that great at drawing, so i had to try really hard. i hope it makes sense. it's really weird to work with something so big and so fucking close to your face and then see it from further away. it was jsut one page but it TOOK SO LONG. also, this is way bigger. WAY WAY bigger than the size we work on for the webcomic. and i also tried to pump in as much detail as possible. these six pages will be some out-of-continuity pages from the series. maybe think of it as beau/arandzi/kitri having a prologue adventure.

also, another thing. i don't usually draw clothing for stop. when i sketch the page, all the people are naked. kristen is the one that draws their clothing over top. so i'm really not used to drawing their uniforms (desert version here) and it's incredibly daunting. i don't usually pencil anything this tight because i'm usually inking it myself or kristen's doing it and she knows what to do with balls of scribble that i pass to her. so.. yeah. super fucking hard. it took way too long, but hte first one's always the hardest, right? ;____;

i grew up in ohio, i only moved from there to seattle at the beginning of 07.

i went to school with a girl whose dad was a grand wizard in the local KKK chapter. when i was as little as 5 years old teachers would treat me what i'll called 'differently". the mothers in the girlscouts told their daughters not to play with me (for the record, i've never gotten a detention in my life, i've gotten a time out ONCE in 4th grade, i was probably the most well behaved child you've ever fucking seen). when our football team would play a black school, they'd put rebel flags in their trucks. i remember being in study hall and a kid drew a picture of a back person being hanged. teacher came in and looked at it erased it, but did nothing. when i was 13 or so this boy asked me out. a couple days later he said he had to break up with me because ifh is dad found out he was dating a not white person he'd beat the fuck out of him. I'm 23. This wasn't 40 years ago, this wasn't 30 years ago, this wasn't 20 years ago, this was 10 years ago. This was 6 years ago.

i never, EVER thought we would have a black president in my lifetime. i didn't think he'd get past the primaries. i ddn't think he'd be nominated. i'm glad i was wrong. i'm glad that if I have a kid, they'll grow up in an american where people won't think "there will never be a minority president".

i have found the most seriously boring blog in the history of the internet. A BLOG ABOUT PENCILS

what's MORE amazing? they don't really talk about mechanical pencils. like to them, mechanical pencils aren't real pencils or something. like holy shit. so fucking boring and i CANNOT STOP READING IT. the amount of knowledge on these obscure pencils is insane. what's weird is that i have shit tons of art supplies and pencils. i have so fucking many you have no idea. it's a serious addiction. but these people seem utterly different. my understanding and subsequent usage of the cylindrical objects i horde so psychotically is strikingly primitive. i also have very little comprehension of QUALITY. i use pretty much everything i can, from shitty ass rose art crap found in a child's lunch box to the coveted trias and copics. all are mercilessly brutalized. i find that sometimes, more important than the lead is the eraser. as long as i can get the shit off the paper a good amount of times i'm happy. i secretly despise pencils that are sp high brow that they don't have erasers. they destroy me with their astonishing impracticality.

what's ~~fucking weird~~ surprising is that the people that are super into these pencils don't seem to be artists, they seem to like using them soley for the purpose of jotting down notes. okay, follow along: an ELECTRONIC JOURNAL that takes NOTES on PENCILS they use to TAKE NOTES WITH although they obviously have access to a computer (presumably notes not about pencils...). they also describe the lead wood casing with terms i would never apply to art supplies. don't get me wrong, i think we all know a shitty pencil when we see one (usually the one your asshole parents got you that were about 50 fucking million for three cents, and every time you had to make do with it you wanted to find the person that made that piece of shit and kill them with the sharp metal that became exposed when the eraser fell the fuck out). but for me there was only "shitty fuck pencil" and "normal pencil". wooden pencils are just fucking annoying to me now, because i have to sharpen them and sometimes that goes horribly wrong. and never goes right again. when i get handed a wooden pencil i feel very surprised like "what the fuck is this? you still exist, wooden pencil?! people still exist that think you're acceptable?" it'd be like someone handing me a rotary phone.

one thing that's cool is that they photograph all the pencils very close up and make them look like very pretty works of art.

anyways. if you're a fucking weirdo like me, you might consider joining the PENCIL OF THE MONTH CLUB. the website is pretty ghetto but they deliver and holy shit do they love their pencils. i ended up looking at that blog just trying to figure out wtf they'd sent me this time. i liek getting things in the mail. last tiem they sent a nail buffer, which has nothing to do with pencils but i had just been thinking that i NEEDED a nail buffer so i saw this as a very serious sign.

got something super sweet at the flea market in freemont yesterday! i got these figures at toys r us the other day

so once i took them out of their plastic little haven, i realized my folly, they're not too great at standing up on their own and i don't have a surplus of little stands anywhere. so when we went to the flea market the other day we saw this awesome toy case. after cleaning it of crayon markings and general dirt, i popped my toys in there. both sides open up and have little slots, so after filling in one side with heroes i popped in some bad guys on the other side (and superman's little helper robot). the inside covers have short four-panel comic strips with people's backstories.

the front cover has Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin, hawkman, Green lantern, Aqua Man, and the Flash fighting Lex, Brainiac, the joker and the penguin inside a crazy ass robot above a city. the back cover has all the heroes on stars. they're all so happy looking ;__;

this was made by kenner and the imprint on it dates it at "1984", which is a year before i was even born! you can't see it in the photos, but it has relief stars all over the yellow plastic inside., there are stars all over it! there are little squares where stickers were supposed to go with each figure's logo/name on it. i love brainiac =3=!

hey bitches. so i just got back from a metric concert. i've never been to a concert before so i was like, horrified by how loud it was at first. well, not hte loudness but like, how the bass vibrated in my chest, it freaked me out. metric was really really good live! which makes me happy, something i hear bands live and they suck but they were better live! like some songs like hustle rose and rock me now i don't give a shit about but they were really amazing live! something about the addition of a blonde that looks high and colored lights made it better? or something? oh but the lead singer was so fucking incoherent. all her singing was top notch but when she stopped and spoke to the audience it was like, the craziest fucking nonsense shit you've ever heard. like it was all english words but none of them seemed to form into sentences.

and the band that opened for them, crystal castles? i love neuromancer, holy shit. it's like, my favorite book i've never read. i know mechanism is a cyberpunk thing, but i've never actually read any cyber punk. one of the characters is weirdly similar to mine (certain really specific details but not like, entirely? just enough to weird me out. it's pretty obvious that william gibson traveled through time and stole my ideas from my unborn head.).

Hi kids. Today I started doing the weekly newsletter for the Bonners. Being an ass, I filled it with my usual threats of doom and signed it "Adriana". Having been raised in Fucking Nowhere, Ohio, surrounded by heathers and emilys and bubbas, I never had any reason to be insecure in my identity. I was almost under the impression that I was the only Adriana in existence, until I met Adri. Now, this year there is another Adriana not only ON MY CAMPUS but IN THE BONNER PROGRAM, a freshman. And this other Adriana wrote to Donna (my boss) with the following:

I think we need to be more specific about which Adriana is going to be
enforcing a reign of terror upon the Bonner email list.

To which I replied:

How horrible! It's begun! After a lifetime of never being confused for anyone else, you've come to upturn my empire. I will say when reviewing applications for new Bonners I made VERY clear my reluctance to accept a new Adriana into the fold. "Either her or me!" I said to the other people who were unable to think of a clever excuse not to have to review applications. At which point it was made clear to me that all along they had been intending to replace me with another Adriana but the application to kick me out of the program had been lost in the mail. They had all sorts of pathetic excuses like "this one wont beat us" and "this one doesn't have that foul stench" and "this one is literate."
But you have a point. We SHOULD distinguish ourselves from one another. From now on I shall be Adriana the Greater and you shall be Adriana the Lesser, or in Latin, Adriana Major and Adriana Minor. Or perhaps I shall just be Adriana the Magnificent and you can be simply Adriana. Or, as I have expressed to Donna, your appearance has caused me to try and formulate a new name for myself, and I might simply go by "Chickie" as "Chickie" Ferguson has a nice ring to it. But I would prefer it if you would change your first name to something else like Bob, or Ferdinand, or Frank. I'm rather partial to Frank.

I'm very serious, I really do want to change my name to Chickie. Doesn't it sound nice? Chickie, Chickie, Chickie, say it out loud and you'll see.

The New Sketchbook: The color sketchbook is coming along nicely, I'm adding at least three images a day and by this weekend I except to be satisfied that I'll have enough to cull down to 50 pages worth of material.

Poison Novel: I'm also writing a book, participating in nanowrimo.org! There are many different types of histories, some that follow eras (Byzantine, Modern, post-Modern, Victorian, Bronze Age) and -isms (communism, fascism, egalitarianism) and others that follow -acies (monarchies, democracies, theocracies). But I also think it's useful to think of History in terms of the individual. An I thought it might be interesting to write a history for a time period that hasn't happened yet in the form of an autobiography. The book takes place in the same universe as Mechanism and is the autobiography of Artemisia. At the age of 13 she begins to exhale a poisonous gas that kills pretty much anyone except her. The condition is irreversible and always ultimately fatal. So she basically lives in this quarantined apartment and wrote this book to kill time. I guess the book is about her life and how she copes with it but it also describes the culture that she lives both in and outside of. It's very hard for me to describe! But if you'd like to read an except you can find it...

Although they share the same name and appearance, I don't think there's very much in common between the Artemisia that's mafia affiliated and the Mechanism version, the biggest correlation being that in my mind, they're the same people in different situations and time periods.

jesus. i'm so tired. some of you might have noticed that i've been heinously busy and having breakdowns all over. it was mostly because of the work i do at the CSL. my boss has no concept of what is an appropriate workload. at all.

so basically, there was an awards ceremony. i work at the CSL, which is the "center for service and learning". basically, they coordinate the volunteer work on campus. i work in the division dedicated to encouraging professors to add community service components to their classes. we find them grants, we give them awards and shit, we give them teaching assistants. because i have some computer savvy and photoshop know-how i'm tagged for designing all the materials and shit that goes out. most of it is shit that no student should be doing for shit pay (i get paid the same amount as long as i work 10 hours a week. but 10 hours a week isn't enough to get anything done so you can see how i'm basically set up for sweatshop shit here.)

and my boss made it clear that she wanted me to present the grantees this year with portraits of themselves. she said this repeatedly. and she knows i've been busting my ass, wasting away my afternoons to go to these professors classes with their moronic students who don't know shit. and by the way, professors? are assholes. they had to be emailed repeatedly before they'd even reply. jesus fucking christ. like i WANT to go draw them? like i WANT to spend MORE time in a fucking classroom listening to MORE fuckhead obies making vague fuckhead comments and putting their stupid fat heads in mine line of sight. yes i LOVE doing that after a long fucking day. i don't WANT to. i HAVE to. it's my fucking job. how would they like it if i just went to their offices and kicked over thier computers and shit? that's what it's like. by being an asshole and not replying to shit you MAKE MY JOB HARDER. YOU MAKE ME WASTE TIME.

that's what everyone else did. but those are pieces of shit. i hate them. when i get them i feel like i've been handed an ugly piece of paper that i can't throw away, i've been given a fucking thing i have to carrying around forever or else i'll feel guilty.

so i made certificates from scratch. you have not lived until you've tried to represent "sustainability" with a modern simplified nature motif. so i worked my ass off making these stupid things. i have pages and pages of my drafts. and someone else tagged me for making their certificates too. so that's 6 in total plus two cards. i know they look a little stupid and simple but i seriously put a retarded amount of thought into these. i also finished the sketches. these are all different images i put together in photoshop etcetc. i know they don't look like much but please understand that these were done in classrooms filled with stupid, annoying people, and caffeinated professors that move around.

so anyways, the ceremony. so i found out today that i am not actually giving them to the grantees tonight. my boss looked so baffled when i mentioned it. I was so mad. i'd stayed up all night redrawing shit and editing crap until it was just right. i used up so much of my own ink making draft prints of it to make sure they looked okay.

so i did all this crap. i missed one of my classes (i'll rant about that class later) and lunch to WORK ON THIS, OK? jesus. you know one of the professors couldn't even be bothered with me, she wanted me to just use photos.

then the ceremony it self was shit. i was a wreck and sleep deprived and totally fucked up my speech, my voice kept giving out strangely. i was so embarrassed because usually i think i do pretty well giving presentations. i won't even get into how fucking mean the professor i was a teaching assistant for was. jesus. mosto f the professors didn't evne show, the one i wanted to see the most that i actually worked with didn't show although she said she would now that i think about it.
